This light, bubbly, Grapefruit-Lime White Wine Spritzer is so refreshing. It strikes a perfect balance between sweet and dry, with just enough of an acid note to be intriguing. Perfect for a hot afternoon or relaxing evening. So easy to drink … maybe too easy to drink. Is it the comfort food of cocktails? I think so.
Ingredients for about a dozen spritzers:
½ cup sugar
¼ cup brandy
¼ cup Apfelkorn
1 grapefruit
3 limes
1 bottle of white wine
Ice
Squirt or Fresca
How to do it:
- Pour sugar into a pitcher. Add brandy and Apfelkorn. Stir. Slice grapefruit into 8 equal-sized chunks. Add to the pitcher and stir. Slice 2 of the limes into 8 equal-sized chunks. Add to the pitcher and stir. Pour in wine. Stir. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours.
- Strain; discard solids. Mixture will keep well for many days, covered and refrigerated.
- Fill a tumbler with ice. Pour in equal parts wine mixture and Squirt. Stir gently. Garnish with lime wheel.
Examining the method, you can see that what we’ve got here is a really a type of sangria, but in the glass it comes off as a spritzer. It’s as easy to make as it is to drink. The initial prep takes all of five minutes. Waiting 24 hours … that might qualify as hard if patience isn’t one of your virtues. When it comes to pouring, I buy the Squirt in those cute, tiny cans. One of them will provide you with two spritzers, and the rest of the cans will wait in the fridge without you having to worry that they’ll loose their carbonation.
Here are some things I haven’t tried, but would like to:
- Substitute tonic water for the Squirt
- Substitute gin for the brandy and Apfelkorn

Well that’s a mouthful! but I love the ingredients! Definitely sangria-like. My problem would be drinking them too fast!

What a fun summer cocktail idea, Jeff! I’ve never thought about using wine in a spritzer, but it totally works. To be fair, I had to google Apfelkorn as I wasn’t familiar with it. (A liqueur I wasn’t familiar with…can you believe it!?) The flavors here sound perfect for a hot summer day…and we’ve got plenty of those this week. Cheers, my friend!

Mmm, nice drink. And you’re right — very much like sangria. But better. 🙂 Thanks!
