This is quite a bit of serious deliciousness. This homemade pumpkin latte has an indescribably deep creaminess without seeming heavy. This is not something you want to casually drink as your attention is focused on other things. It has solemn pumpkin flavor that needs to be enjoyed specifically, as you bring your entire life to a stop in order to, for just a few minutes, bask in the rays of a early fall sun and think of nothing but enjoying the moment.
Ingredients for one serving:
1/2 cup milk
2 heaping tsp pumpkin purée
1/8 tsp Coffee Spicing Blend with Cardamom (see notes)
How to do it:
- Brew a shot of espresso. Meanwhile, place milk, pumpkin, and spice into a frothing jug and stir.
- Froth the milk mixture until the bottom of the jug is very hot to the touch, about 60 seconds.
- Pour the milk into the espresso and enjoy.
Notes:
This recipe will produce a latte that is delightfully pumpkin-spice flavored, but not sweet. I feel that the milk makes the drink sweet enough. It isn’t savory, even if it also isn’t sugary. You can, of course, add simple syrup to the espresso shot, and stir the frothed milk into the drink.
The spice blend I used for this recipe comes from Spice and Tease, in New York City. It isn’t available on their website, so you’re just going to have to go to New York. Substitute pumpkin pie spice, and toss in a pinch of cardamom.
You don’t need a fancy machine to froth milk. You can do it with a whisk or even a French press (and a bit of old-fashioned muscle).
The backstory
I’m temped to use terms like DIY to describe this homemade pumpkin spice latte, but that would imply that it tastes like one you might get from Starbucks. There’s no comparison. That’s a latte with spices. This is actual pumpkin and spices. The Starbucks PSL is wonderful. This is heavenly.
This recipe was born of all the leftover pumpkin purée that comes from making pumpkin waffles. (Yes! It’s time to bring those back into rotation!) It was also inspired by a cook named Matt.

And if you make one for someone who could use a bit of love, maybe it has the power to make the world slightly better.

Jeff – to this day, one month into my 62nd year, I have still yet to taste coffee (or tea). I am sure to a food connoisseur like yourself, this is sacrilege. But I do love some good pumpkin spice!
Wow! By contrast, I have not gone a day of my life, for the most part, without at least one! Apparently you and I are balancing out the universe in this regard.
Balance in the universe is a good thing. At least you weren’t appalled!
I tend to want to celebrate difference, rather than be appalled by it.
Jeff, fall has definitely arrived over this way, so it’s officially pumpkin season here. Although ten years ago you couldn’t find one here. Pumpkin puree is not common here at all and pumpkin spice is not on the shelves. But, I happen to have a can or three of canned puree brought to us from the US and some shall be used to try this fall delight.

I love that you used actual pumpkin puree in this latte, Jeff! I mean the Starbucks version is tasty, but I find it to be more like dessert than coffee. This is something I could see myself waking up to on this chilly mornings!

This sounds like a winner. On a similar note, pumpkin beers are beginning to arrive at beer purveyors. I’ve gotten to like them, though some breweries make them better than others.
That sounds like it’d be worth checking out. Thanks!
Interesting combo!
Thank you!
This pumpkin latte looks and sounds fabulous, especially your description of the early morning moments drinking this makes me think I need to start drinking coffee! If anything will make me, then it’s definitely the fall flavours like this. Enjoy!

I am intrigued by the luxurious creaminess you describe, even though I am not fond of pumpkin spice. This would be a great way to use up that wee bit of pumpkin purée that is inevitably left over when making a pie.

Love the idea of using pumpkin puree! Very creative. And very fall-forward flavor. 🙂 Thanks!

Jeff, this looks gorgeous and sounds like my kind of Pumpkin Latte! I’m not a fan of sweetened coffee and agree, milk adds some sweetness! But a real pumpkin latte with pumpkin spice and cardamom (among my favorite spices!). Count me in! Now, how to get to New York and back by tomorrow to get that spice mix? Hmmmm. Maybe just the pumpkin spice jar.

Pumpkin spices and a pinch of cardamom will do the trick.
Pumpkin Spice is my jam! I have got to make this at home. It will definitely save me money instead of throwing it at Starbucks every few days!

Jeff,
Interesting! Just to try this latte I will have to buy a pumpkin. It definitely looks dreamy and creamy, like you said! But to wake up to be In the moment in fall with a hot cup of spiced latte especially that cardamom is a real luxury. Thanks for thinking out of the box and giving us this recipe. Joy!

You’re welcome! But don’t buy a pumpkin. Just get yourself a can of pumpkin puree. IMNHO, it’s not worth cooking a pumpkin down into puree when it tastes exactly like the canned version.
My wife loves coffee and there is not single day that goes without it and I am just the opposite, I have till date never tasted coffee/tea. I showed this recipe to her and she is like I want to try this.
I can’t imagine never having coffee!
With all my culinary skills, I’ve never learned how to make a frothy drink- maybe it’s because I’m not a coffee drinker. I know that at this time of the year when lots of pumpkin flavored recipes appear. I love pumpkin (especially pumpkin pie) so this drink would be right up my alley!
