Do Not Run Afoul of the New Pumpkin Spice Laws

You must partake of your first pumpkin spice no later than today, Labor Day … although because of COVID, there is currently a grace period that allows for you to delay your pumpkin spice until September 15th. As you may know, the new pumpkin mandates require you to have pumpkin spice in at least two forms, no more than two weeks apart, from Labor Day through Thanksgiving.

You don’t have to carry a PSL with you when your outdoors, but you’re required to have one with you at all time when indoors.

Please keep in mind that injecting pumpkin directly into your veins is not recommended! In a pinch, you can cover your mouth and nose with a pumpkin spice waffle, without eating it, and just inhale the fumes. (It helps if the waffle does not have butter and syrup on it, in that case.) But it is far more pleasant to simply get your pumpkin spice in oral form.

    • I love pumpking waffles! And I say that as someone who got on the pumpkin train decades ago, when it was more of a couple of seats in the last car of an Amtrak. So, it’s the pumpkin trend that has caught up with me, not the other way around.

  1. You crack me up. I meant to mention the aforementioned “pumpkin spice laws” yesterday on my comment… I hope it’s acceptable to use pumpkin spice in my apple pie.

      • It works pretty well, and gives the pie a bit of a twist. I don’t always do it, but it’s fun for a change. (Less is needed than in a pumpkin pie, and sometimes I add coriander to the mix.0

        • That is really interesting! I make a lot of apple crisps in the fall; I’ll have to use them to experiment with this idea!

    • Actually, I remember reading on your blog that you used to do that kind of thing to sneak something good into your kids’ diet, and now here you are doing it for their kids!

    • I haven’t regretted buying mine. I’m sure any of the waffle recipes would make good pancakes, though!

  2. Haha you’re funny!
I must make a self-incrimination statement: I haven’t started PSL nor pumpkin season yet. And I am not going for another few weeks or so. It’s still summer, remember?
On the other hand, I’ve been already making many apple recipes as well as using warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger lately, so I guess I won’t be charged for my anti-social behavior haha? By the way, all these recipes sound delicious!

    • Thanks, Ben! Yeah, I do love pumpkin, but I have to say that in the fall, I’m more about apples. I think apples will eventually become the new pumpkin. As much as I love pumpkin, I think we should agree to push it back to November, where it belongs!

  3. Evidently I am the only person in the world who does not like pumpkin spice. Every yearI have to keep a sharp eye out for the Fall Police or face arrest for shunning lattes and muffins and cheesecake and anything else with that dreadful pumpkin spice flavor.
And the funny thing is, I really do love the way it smells.

    • That is so funny. My husband loves the smell of coffee, but hates the taste of it, so I’m familiar with this. I recommend that you draw pumpkins with colored markers on your latte cups. That will almost certainly throw off the authorities.

  4. What a great round up. This time of year just begs the warming flavours of pumpkin spice, but I never knew that there was a time limit! I’ve never been one to follow the “no wearing white after labour day” so, I guess I’d probably break the pumpkin spice rules too.

    • I know. It’s kind of silly, in a way, artificial seasonal ideas like that. Although I have to admit that once they take hold, they do have a kind of charm about them sometimes.

  5. So funny, laughing out loud at the butter and syrupy waffle to cover your mouth and nose. Because of course! I do love pumpkin, and love it more every year. Each of those recipes look totally worthy of fulfilling my pumpkin ingestion requirement. How to choose, how to choose?…

    • You can’t go wrong with any of the waffles. One of them has espresso syrup – my favorite.

    • I never thought of that! Have you ever heard that you can get buzzed from snorting cinnamon? I’ve never out-and-out snorted it (thank God I’m not quite that crazy), but I once was trying to get a really fine dusting of cinnamon onto some merengue, and thought blowing on it would be the best way, but it required multiple short burst of breaths, and as I was holding the cinnamon close to my face as I did this, I wound up inhaling it through my nose and I did get kind of light headed.

  6. We are not pumpkin fans in this family. My husband is from the Middle East and he just can’t develop a taste for pumpkin spice! No pumpkin pie or pumpkin pancakes in this house. I know most people LOVE pumpkin and you certainly are sharing some amazing looking treats. Enjoy

    • What? No pumpkin pie??? Are you sure you want to go public with that in this political climate? 🙂

  7. You’re so funny. Love everything about this post. (Especially the waffles.) What I love even more is that you’ve opened the pumpkin door. Normally I don’t even like to hear about pumpkins (let alone their associated spice mix) until October — but, this year feels different. Maybe because we sort of skipped the holiday hoopla last year?) In any case, I made a pumpkin pie yesterday! No joke. 😀 ~Valentina

    • Nice! I toyed with making pumpkin pie all summer. I think I have one in my very near future.

  8. LOL. I missed the pumpkin spice craze when we were living in France, so the pumpkin-everything right now is a bit overwhelming. But I love a PSL and look forward to making some of those pumpkin spice waffles in the very near future!

  9. When the pumpkin-spice-in-coffee craze started I was totally confused, because who wants pumpkin in their latte? But then I realized that Starbucks were talking about the spice without the pumpkin itself, which sounds to me a lot better and less bizarre. I’ve been meaning to try it forever. Or at least since 2003 when they introduced it.
