Adult Lunchbox 1

Here are some things I like to take to work with me. Yes, a lot of them are desserts. You can have lunch without a dessert, but I’d rather live, live, live! I have a strong preference against reheating anything at work, so these are all things that can be eaten cold or at room temp.

  1. What an amazing variety, looks like you never get bored. I always made extra dinner the night before and ate that for lunch when I worked in an outside office. A little repetitive but I didn’t mind. Once a week we would all go out for lunch, sometimes as simple as a sausage from the hotdog vendor.

    • Oh, that’s one of my favorite things to do, too. The only drawback – and it’s slight – is that I like to be able to take my lunch anywhere – outside, for instance, if it’s nice out – with as little fuss as possible, so I try to take things with me that don’t have to be reheated.

      • Chicago has some lovely green spaces downtown, as does (or did) Toronto. When I ran the national design department at KPMG, my entire gang would go out together. One of our favourite places was this abandoned garage foundation the city turned into a park. The large geometric concrete foundation blocks kept everything a bit warmer so it was lovely during the fringe season.

        • That sounds like it’d be a great idea. When I was really little – like five or so – my mom would pack me a lunch and I’d go find a place outside to eat it. I loved finding sheltered places, like under the lower boughs of a fir free. There’s still a part of me that thinks all the way back to that time when I pack a lunch and eat it outside.

  2. I can’t think of anything better tasting for lunch than a cup of coffee and a couple of chocolate chip cookies.
I am going to make the March hare salad. It would be a great thing to have on hand for quick lunches.

    • It’s good, and really different. And I think it’s pretty good for you.

  3. Dessert for lunch? Count me in! I know that isn’t what you said, but it is a good idea… no?) Love this series of items and am just so glad I am retired and don’t need to pack lunches anymore.

  4. Jeff you must be the absolute envy of your work colleagues if you eat lunch in a combined lunchroom. Leftovers are great. I always felt like a sugar hit around 4 pm in the afternoon when I was working, you’ve got that covered. Your photos are also a lovely overview of all the deliciousness that comes out of your kitchen. Well done, I still enjoy a good lunch too.

  5. This is such a great post Jeff! I’m always looking for portable lunch ideas. I’m also not a fan of reheating food at work, and I love that these recipes don’t need to be reheated. That peach and tomato salad in particular caught my eye, can’t wait to try it!

  6. What a fancy list of lunchbox ideas! I normally go with something super easy – just like a carrot salad or sautéed vegetables – but I would certainly love to have something more extravagant every now and then 🙂

  7. Why don’t you like to reheat things at lunch? Does the thought of following someone who just microwaved their leftover fish for 18 minutes scare you? Understandable. Also, I need a slice of that cheesecake!

    • I know, it’s weird, right? There’s a lounge near my office, and it has a microwave, and sometimes I do go down there and use it. But I’d rather be more spontaneous, and either nibble on something while I’m working, or take my food outside if it’s nice, and not have to think about whether the container I’m packing the food in is microwave-friendly. And yes, I always have a feeling that the shared-use microwave is going to smell weird, and who knows when it was cleaned last, if ever. All tiny issues that wind up adding up, at least in my mind.

  8. I like the idea of salads or the egg and bacon rolls. I’m so glad i don’t have to go out to work, and bother about ‘school lunches’ – tee hee.

  9. Yum, Yum, Yum. I need to hire you to pack my lunches for me. I’m usually a boring pbj girl and that’s it 🙁
